Excursion to the Zingaro Nature Reserve, Scopello, Guidaloca, Faraglioni

The Zingaro Nature Reserve stretches along the western coast of the Gulf of Castellammare, on the San Vito Lo Capo peninsula, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea between Castellammare del Golfo and Trapani. The territory of the reserve lies partly in the municipality of San Vito Lo Capo and partly in Castellammare del Golfo. It extends for about 7 km of coastline and nearly 1,700 hectares of unspoiled nature.

The flora in the reserve is extraordinarily rich, with around 670 plant species, many of which are rare and endemic. Of these, 502 are dicotyledons, 153 monocotyledons, 3 gymnosperms, and 10 pteridophytes. The biodiversity also includes 130 species of lichens, 35 moss species, and 27 types of fungi.

The original landscape was mainly composed of evergreen Mediterranean forest, with holm oak groves and fragments of cork oak woodland—now almost extinct in western Sicily. The coastal areas are dominated by low Mediterranean scrub, featuring plants such as hairy broom, Spanish broom, wild thyme, multiflora heather, wild olive, tree spurge, and Bivona’s spurge. You’ll also find laurel, mallow, capers, and wild fennel.

The most distinctive feature of the reserve is the dwarf palm garigue, which covers large areas of the coastal landscape. In the Zingaro area, some Chamaerops humilis palms grow up to 2–3 meters tall, resembling a thick Mediterranean scrub. As you walk the reserve’s trails, you’ll be surrounded by a wild and fascinating natural environment, with dwarf palm clusters, rosemary bushes, caves suddenly opening along rocky walls, and crystal-clear coves that resemble Caribbean beaches.

The reserve is home to 39 species of nesting birds, including the peregrine falcon. The main trail, the most popular among visitors, runs for about 7 km and connects the southern entrance (Scopello) with the northern entrance (San Vito Lo Capo). The one-way hike takes approximately 2 hours.
