Valley of the Temples (Agrigento)
The Valley of the Temples is an archaeological site of extraordinary importance, renowned for its exceptional state of preservation and its series of Doric temples dating back to the Hellenic period. Since 1997, the entire site has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the most iconic symbols of the city of Agrigento and one of the top tourist attractions in all of Sicily.
The site features the remains of ten Doric temples, three sanctuaries, and a high concentration of necropolises. Among the most significant temples:
• Temple of Concordia, one of the best-preserved temples in the ancient world
• Temple of Hera Lacinia (or Temple of Juno), built in the 5th century BC and set on fire by the Carthaginians in 406 BC
• Temple of Heracles
• Temple of Zeus Olympios
• Temple of the Dioscuri
• Temple of Hephaestus
• Temple of Athena
• Temple of Asclepius
• Temple of Demeter
• Temple of Isis
Also within the site is the so-called Tomb of Theron, a large pyramid-shaped tuff monument believed to commemorate the fallen of the Second Punic War.
The archaeological park covers approximately 1,300 hectares, making it the largest archaeological site in the world. It is surrounded by a breathtaking rural landscape, rich with centuries-old olive trees and almond groves. The ancient city of Akragas, founded around 582 BC by Greek settlers from Gela and Rhodes, was one of the most important Greek colonies in Magna Graecia.

Scala dei Turchi (Realmonte - Agrigento)
The Scala dei Turchi (Turkish Steps) is a striking white cliff that rises above the sea between Realmonte and Porto Empedocle. It has become a famous tourist attraction thanks to its unique natural shape and pure white color, as well as its appearance in the popular novels featuring Inspector Montalbano.
This spectacular rock formation is made of marl, a sedimentary rock composed of limestone and clay, with a smooth, undulating shape that resembles a natural staircase. The name derives from historical pirate raids by Saracens (often generically referred to as “Turks”), who found refuge in this area due to its protection from the wind and easy access from the sea.
The cliff lies between two stretches of fine sandy beach. To reach it, visitors walk along the shoreline and climb up the soft white rock. It is a true icon of Sicilian seaside tourism, attracting visitors from all over the world.
